The Way of the Alchemist

The practice

Try it tonight: what do you actually feel right now?

To practise Radical Awareness the way The Way of the Alchemist teaches it, sit somewhere quiet for about ten minutes, bring to mind the thing you want, and notice what you actually feel. Name each feeling quietly, like "frustration", "fear" or "trying", and stay with it without fixing it until it softens. Some states loosen in one sitting and some take a lot longer.

The steps

  1. Pick a time when you're not in a rush. Sit somewhere quiet.
  2. Bring to mind the thing you want to manifest.
  3. Ask yourself: what do I actually feel right now when I think about it? Not what you want to feel. What's actually there, in your chest or your stomach.
  4. Name it quietly to yourself. "Frustration." "Fear." "Desperation." If you notice you're trying to make something happen, label that too: "trying."
  5. Stay with it. Don't fix it, argue with it or replace it with a nicer thought. Just let it be.
  6. Ask what's underneath it. Then label that.
  7. When thoughts pull you away, label them "thinking" and come back to the feeling.

Just let it be.

From a recorded talk

Be gentle with what comes up

A lot of what you find won't be pleasant. It helps to remember where it came from.

That energetic blockage didn't just come out of nowhere. It came out as a byproduct of the life experiences that you had to go through in your life.

From a recorded talk

None of it makes you a bad person. It also wasn't your fault. Seeing it with some compassion makes it a lot easier to stay with.

Before anything else, accept it

In my video on visualising I said that before we try to fix anything, we need to accept it for what it is. That goes for where you are in life too. Fighting where you are keeps you stuck in it.

How you know it's dissolving

Over time the feeling starts to feel neutral. You can think about the thing that used to hurt and it doesn't grab you the same way. You might even feel light about it. I've described thinking of a state like betrayal and just feeling, so what? It doesn't have power over me anymore.

Expect a test

After you've worked on something, life will often bring a situation that pokes the same spot. I call it a little test from the universe. If you react, that's useful information. It means there's more to clear, so you sit with it again.

Give it time

Don't try to get through everything in one go. If you rush, part of the state stays dormant and comes back later. Ten quiet minutes a day is plenty. This is the practice I teach on my channel and in The Alchemists.

Questions people ask me

How long does Radical Awareness take to work?

I can't give you a timeframe. Some states loosen in one sitting. Others come back for days or weeks. Give it time and be gentle with yourself. If you rush it, part of the state just goes quiet and stays there.

What if I feel worse when I start?

That's common. You're finally looking at things you've been carrying for a long time. Go slowly, keep the sessions short, and stop if it gets too much. If it feels overwhelming, talk to a qualified professional.

What if the feeling doesn't go away?

Then it isn't finished yet, and that's fine. Ask what's underneath it. The first label is often not the deepest one. Come back to it another day.

Can I still do affirmations or visualisation?

You can. I'd do Radical Awareness first. If you visualise on top of fear, you're mostly practising the fear. Once you've sat with what's there, visualising feels very different.

What if nothing comes up at all?

Notice that. Numbness, boredom or thinking about something else are states too. Label them and stay with them.
